THE CITY’S LIVING ROOM

Infrastructure in Loop of Boxes

The modern city has always had an interesting relationship with the infrastructure. The latter shapes the skeleton of the City and fosters the City’s development. However, it remains distant from the City - we rarely know how our infrastructure is working, or even where it is locating. In this project, the integration of the infrastructure with the public domain is attempted to break the barriers between the people and the infrastructural systems and hoped to educate the people to address their necessity.

The MLP is designed as a productive landscape to demonstrate the agriculture process from the purification of water to the farming fields. Acting as the central core of the MLP, the building serves as a public museum for paddy rice production as an extension of the agriculture learning process which originates from water. The paddy rice production museum also establishes the identity of Qianhai – a new transparent city with a new technology that integrates with the existing historic context of the region.

The museum is designed into 3-spatial divisions to allow the visitors to understand and experience in 3 ways, with the permanent exhibition part to understand the source of the water and the productive landscape, the feature paddy rice making a public loop, and the community part for the interactive learning activities. A scattered approach of the programmes in different scales of boxes based on the existing engineering parts is adopted to enhance the flexibility between each program subject to changes in the future times and to design the interior as a miniature of the City.
